First use of Doka's Table Lifting System in U.S.

The first U.S. use of Doka's Table Lifting System (TLS) in conjunction with pre-assembled Dokamatic tables has proven to save time and labour on two high-profile projects: the River House Condominiums in Grand Rapids, Mich. and the Renaissance Hotel in Raleigh, N.C.

Construction of the River House Condominiums, a 36-storey horizontal and vertical post-tensioned concrete structure began in 2006. Upon completion, this structure will be the second tallest building in the state and will provide additional residences for people who want to live in the downtown area. Concrete contractor Kent Companies of Grand Rapids is constructing the concrete frame for River House. During their visit to World of Concrete 2007, they quickly recognized how the Dokamatic tableforms and the TLS system were ideal for this project.
Dokamatic, the fast pre-assem¬bled slab formwork system, can be moved by just one field work¬er with the aid of a powered drive unit and shifting trolley. The sys¬tem has now been enhanced with the development of the Doka Ta¬ble Lifting System (TLS). The TLS is an electric powered lifting plat¬form that allows Dokamatic table-forms to be cycled between floors without the need for a crane. The system is adaptable to any build¬ing structure and can be used from the ground floor up. It at¬taches to the previously cast slab with embedded anchors, and can¬tilevers from the building as a mechanical outrigger platform.
For non-typical floors 1 through 5, concrete contractor Kent Com¬panies utilized the versatile Dokaflex system. Dokamatic Ta¬bles were then introduced with the start of typical Level 6 and the Doka Table Lifting System on Level 7. More than 30,000 square feet of tables have been supplied and all tables and loose Dokaflex formwork is being cycled from floor to floor, independently of the crane, with the TLS.
"Without the TLS, we would not be as far along on the project as we are," said Paul Bowne, Kent Companies Project Manager.

The TLS also proved benefi¬cial for the Renaissance Hotel, a new 10-storey hotel structure with a post-tensioned slab built over two levels of parking un¬der construction at North Hills, a new three-city block mixed-use district in Raleigh, N.C. Con¬crete contractor United Forming Inc. began using the TLS on lev¬el four in August and will top out the 229-room four-star luxury ho¬tel in January 2008. By installing the Table Lifting System to the structure in order to move the ta¬bles from floor to floor, the crane was free to move the shear wall formwork and rebar as* well as unload trucks for all contractors at the same time. Juvenal Ibarra, General Superintendent of United Forming, said, "I like the TLS for two reasons -- it takes less labour and no crane time to move the tables, and it is much safer than pulling them out with a crane."

All round safety at all heighs

The Borough of Croydon is visibly developing into one of South London's most up-and-coming residential districts. Many new apartments are being built here, with one of the latest projects being the 25-storey residential development "Altitude 25". Set to be Croydon's tallest building and a defining urban landmark, this 82 m elliptical tower will comprise 235 residential units when completed. Contractors Foundation Developments Ltd. are using the new Xclimb 60 protection-screen system to ensure the safety of the slab-forming operations.
Twenty protection-screen units enclose the top four floors at a time, so as to safeguard all the slab-forming operations on the structure shell. This room-high enclosure provides complete protection around the accident-prone edges of the floor-slabs where edge falsework and column forming operations have to be carried out. Made of trapezoidal sheet, the protection-screen system not only protects the site crew against falls, but also against inclement weather. In a safe, "feel-good" working environment like this, it's no surprise that the forming operations move ahead much better. To facilitate shifting the floor-slab formwork up to the next floor, the protection screen comes with three integral loading platforms. From these, the formwork equipment is lifted by crane to the next forming level.Xclimb 60 can either be lifted and reset by crane, or by handy portable hydraulic units. Either way, the vertical profiles of the protection screen are guided up the side of the structure in positioning shoes, permitting safe, fast and efficient weather-independent repositioning operations even when wind-speeds of up to 72 km/h (45 mph) are experienced. As the site crane was already working to capacity, it was decided in London to go for the hydraulic option. One hydraulic unit and four hydraulic cylinders are all that is needed to raise two protection-screen units at the same time. In this way, the 83-m-circumference enclosure on the Altitude 25 project is climbed one storey upwards in just one day. During this climbing operation, the formwork to the in-situ concrete slabs can stay in place, which greatly speeds up the construction workflow. FDL-Project Manager Matt Callaghan puts it like this: "The Xclimb system gives our people the ideal protection while they're working on the floors under construction. The hydraulic lifting operation means that the crane stays free, so in the meantime the team can get on with the job of pouring the columns at the slab-edges, using concrete skips." .

Alimak lifts off at Vietnam power station

An Alimak lift has been installed to provide access to monitoring equipment, inside the 200 m high chimney of the recently completed Uong Bi no. 1 extension power station in Vietnam.
The enlarged thermal power plant, located in northern Quang Ninh province, has begun supplying electricity for Vietnam's national grid following a three-year construction period. The power plant was the first of its kind to be designed, built, installed and commissioned by Machinery Installation Corporation (Lilama), a Vietnamese Corporation.
The initial order for the Alimak lift was placed by the Italian subcontractor for the chimney construction, Chimneys and Refractories International S.r.l (CRint). Following its successful installation and commissioning, the company is bidding for the second chimney contract on Uong Bi no. 2, which will be started later this year.
Designed to operate in demanding industrial environments, the installed Alimak SE 400 features a lifting height of I 185.4 m and equipped with the company's I rack and pinion drive system.
The Alimak rack and pinion drive system does not need an expensive machine room as the lift carries its own machinery and no load bearing lift shaft is required. In I a power outage, the lift car can slide back to I the nearest landing by gravity at controlled j speed using the centrifugal brake. If the I rated speed exceeds, the car is stopped I automatically by a safety device.
The Alimak SE ranges is available with ( capacities of between 300 and 2,400 kg, and features 30 different sized standard cars up to a maximum 1.56 m by 3 m. Travelling speeds are up to 1.0 m/sec and lifting heights can he up to 250 m with standard accessories.
The US$300 million Uong Bi no.l expansion has a capacity of 300 mW and is expected to generate an annual output ol / 286 billion kWh.
